Dr. Amenta has been at the Homewood Hearing Center practice since October 1, 1997. He took it over from Dr. Young Lee, who was retiring. It is an interesting fact Dr. Lee took over the practice from Dr. Borkenhagen, an otolaryngologist who started in this building in the 1960s. So, there has been an “ENT” in this location for over six decades.
Dr. Amenta obtained his undergraduate degree in experimental psychology (hearing) at Loyola University of Chicago. He received his medical degree from a combined degree program at the University of Illinois, where he also received a master’s degree in speech and hearing science (psychoacoustics). His specialty residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery was at the University of Chicago.
He has given talks to the local medical staff about sudden hearing loss, hearing loss and dementia and obstructive sleep apnea.
Dr. Amenta loves music, especially classical music and opera. He has been on the Board of the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra since 2002. He writes their program notes to explain the background and interesting aspects of the pieces being performed and sometimes lectures on these before the concerts. He has written and often discussed the article titled The Opening of the Mahler Ninth Symphony and the Bernstein “Heart-Beat” Hypothesis.
